Why a new branch is not a failing branch

The most common misdiagnosis in a first multi-location report, and the reason head office funds the wrong thing.

The pattern in every first report

A multi-location evaluation is run, the locations are ranked, and the newest ones are at the bottom. The conclusion drawn is that those branches have a problem. Usually they have a duration.

Why new locations score low for structural reasons

Independent corroboration accumulates over years and is the largest component of the score. Local coverage requires being present long enough for something to happen. Reviews require customers, and customers require time. None of these can be bought quickly, and all of them are working correctly.

A branch open eight months with a low score may be exactly where it should be.

How to tell the difference

Compare to expectation, not to siblings. The useful question is whether this location is where a location of its age should be, which requires knowing what the curve looks like across the estate.

Look at the components, not the total. Low corroboration at eight months is normal. Low profile completeness at eight months is not, and it is entirely within the operator control.

Check the rate, not the level. A new location accumulating references is fine. A new location accumulating nothing after a year is a finding.

The cost of getting this wrong

Head office funds visibility work at the newest branches, which are on a normal curve, and does nothing at the mature branch quietly sitting at the bottom of its own market. The spend produces no measurable change, because the thing being addressed was time, and the conclusion drawn is that measurement does not work.

What a report should therefore include
