Why two identical branches are described differently
Same brand, same services, same pricing, same website. Completely different AI visibility. Five things vary per location and none of them is the site.
The shared site is the misleading part
Head office reasonably assumes that because every location shares one website, one brand and one set of services, they should be represented the same way. The website is often the smallest input into how an individual location is described.
What varies
Tenure. Independent references accumulate over years. A branch open ten years and one open ten months are not comparable, however identical the marketing.
Local corroboration. Community mentions, local press, chamber listings, and neighbourhood coverage attach to a place. They are earned by being present, and presence takes time.
Profile maintenance. Hours, categories, photographs and descriptions are usually maintained by whoever happens to be at that location, so quality varies with staffing rather than with strategy.
Review behaviour. Volume, recency and whether anyone responds. All location-attached, all compounding, and a branch that stopped responding eighteen months ago is carrying a signal nobody at head office can see.
Competitive density. Being one of four options in a town is a different problem from being one of ninety in a city. The same evidence produces a different outcome.
Why this surprises people
Because every lever head office controls is shared, and every lever that actually varies is local, invisible from the centre, and usually not anyone specific job. The result is a variance nobody chose and nobody is responsible for.
What to do with the finding
